What to Do If You’re Stuck

During the first, quick pass, you may gloss over parts that you’re not sure how to handle. If you hit a roadblock or cannot continue, set your mental virtual assistants to the task.

To activate the incubating powers of your brain, wrestle with the problem for a while, then go do something else.

Your brain automatically reserves background cycles for unfinished work, like an unsolved problem. This is a variation on the incubation effect, and you can use it to your advantage.

For this strategy to work, you must consider the task unfinished. Remind yourself of the unsolved problem. Make a note of unresolved issues and scan them when you leave the desk or stop working.

Go do something entirely different. Ideally, find an activity that doesn’t require deep focus and therefore allows your mind to wander. These might include:

Sitting on a train

Playing fetch with the dog

Sitting in a particularly boring meeting (although this is not recommended if the meeting is important)

Washing the dishes
